Davis, Calif. - The Stanford Cardinal men's soccer team fell to UC Davis 1-0 at Aggie Field Sunday.
UC Davis improves to 1-0-1 for the season. The Cardinal moves to 0-1-1 overall.
Aggie Dan Campbell entered the game just 15 minutes in during an injury substitution for teammate Ian Conklin. Moments later, Aggie midfielder Nicholas Lind saved a ball from rolling out of bounds by flipping it to Juan Hernandez. Hernandez then lofted a ball deep into Stanford territory to Campbell, who in turn fired a missile out of reach of Cardinal goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen.
Stanford had several opportunities to tie the contest before halftime. Luke Sager was awarded a free kick from about 10 yards above the Aggie penalty box in the 37th minute, but UC Davis freshman keeper Derek Shaffer was there for the save. Two minutes later, Cardinal sophomore Scott Bolkan sent a low drive toward the Aggie net but Shaffer stopped the attempt with a sliding save. Sager rebounded the shot but could not convert.
Marcus Ryan also sent a free kick from 25 yards in the 54th minute toward the UC Davis net but Shaffer again came up with a key save. The Cardinal's last substantial chance to tie the match came in the 77th minute as six players surrounded the Aggie penalty box. Junior midfielder Bret Shimizu finally got an open look and shot, but missed just left of the post. In all, Stanford outshot its hosts by a 14-4 margin.
The Cardinal are back in action on Friday, September 9, against UC Northridge at a tournament in Berkeley as they continue their five game road trip to kick off the 2005 season.
