Stanford, Calif. - Stanford and California met for the 42nd time in series history tonight, with the 18th-ranked Golden Bears taking a 1-0 victory over the Cardinal at Maloney Field. Stanford falls to 3-6-2 on the year with an 0-2-1 mark in Pac-10 play, while Cal improves to 8-2-1 overall, with a 1-2-1 record in conference action.

Cal's Pieter Berger scored his third goal of the season tonight, netting the game winner in the 78th minute to give the Golden Bears their first Pac-10 win. Luke Sassano crossed the ball into the box, and Berger was able to push it into the goal after it deflected off the Stanford defense.

Stanford keeper Andrew Kartunen recorded four saves in goal, while Cal goalie Eric Kronberg also added four saves.

Stanford will be back in action at Maloney Field next weekend, as the Cardinal host Washington on Friday at 7 p.m., before welcoming Oregon State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
