Stanford, Calif. - Despite outshooting their opponent 10-7, the Stanford men's soccer team fell to Oregon State this afternoon, 3-1, at Maloney Field before a crowd of 559. The Cardinal drop to 3-8-2 overall, 0-4-1 in the Pac-10 while the Beavers improve to 8-3-4, 4-1-0 in league play.
Stanford played aggressively in the first half, challenging the Beaver defenders and goalkeeper for much of the half. Scott Bolkan narrowly missed a goal at 32.57 when he headed a ball from Galen Thompson that went high. Five minutes later, Marcus Ryan's shot off of a free kick also sailed a bit high of the net. In all the Cardinal had five shots in the first half.
Oregon State scored their first goal late in the first half when Bryan Jordan scored (43.52) off of an assist from Brett Gardner.
Robbie Findley showed some fancy footwork in front of the goal when he scored the second Oregon State goal at 60:52 off of an assist from Alex Asai.
The Cardinal scored their first goal since the San Diego State game when Scott Bolkan found the back of the net in heavy traffic at 76.42 (assist by Michael Alexander). It was the first collegiate goal for Bolkan who is playing only his third game at the forward position.
OSU's Bryan Jordan would tally his second goal of the game in the 88th minute (assist Robbie Findley) to give the Beavers some breathing room.
Although the Cardinal had five shots in the second half, none found the back of the net.
Stanford is back in action next weekend, traveling to Corvallis, Ore. to take on the Beavers on Friday, October 21, at 1 p.m. They will then head to Seattle, Wash., on Sunday October 23, at 1 p.m. to face the Huskies.
