Stanford Wins Ninth Straight Victory Over Long Beach State, 10-8

Long Beach, Calif. - Third-ranked Stanford out-scored the Long Beach State 49ers 10-8 in their house today. The Cardinal improves to 13-3 this season, with a 2-0 MPSF record. Long Beach State falls to 15-9 this season.

The game started off tight with a 3-3 tie after the first quarter, but Stanford took the lead in the second quarter to close the half 5-4. Stanford out-scored the 49ers 4-1 in the third quarter to take command of the game. Thomas Hopkins got things rolling at 6:09 in the third scoring on a four-meter penalty shot. Peter Varellas led the team with three goals on the day, while Hopkins and William Hindle-Katel each scored twice.

Tyler Drake, J.J. Garton, and Marcello Pantuliano each got on the board with one goal apiece to help defeat the 49ers. Sandy Hohener played a big hand in the victory with nine saves.

The Cardinal return home next weekend to take on #4 UCLA and #5 Pepperdine, Saturday at 1:00pm and Sunday at 12:00pm respectively.
