Stanford, Calif. - 19th-ranked Stanford (7-3-1, 1-0-0) opened Pac-10 play tonight with a 1-0 victory over Washington State (7-4-1, 0-1-0) at Maloney Field. Junior Shari Summers netted the game-winning goal in the 70th minute to help the Cardinal win its conference opener for the fourth time in the past five seasons.
Summers scored the lone goal of the evening after senior Hayley Hunt got her the ball just in front of the cage. Summers' shot snuck between the keeper's legs to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead at 69:05.
Stanford goalie Alex Gamble notched her fifth shutout of the season and recorded up one save, while Cougar keeper Katie Hultin earned three saves with one goal allowed.
