Stanford, Calif. - Two goals late in the second period by Marcus Ryan and Kyle Hency gave the Stanford men's soccer team a 2-0 victory over Army tonight at the Stanford Nike Classic at Maloney Field. The Cardinal improve to 2-4-1 overall, while the Black Knights drop to 1-7-0 on the year.
With the score still 0-0 late in the second period, sophomore Marcus Ryan (Littleton, CO) found the back of the net with a pass from teammate Kyle Hency (Waterloo, IL) in the 86th minute of play to give the Cardinal the 1-0 lead.
A little over a minute later, sophomore Evan Morgan (Littleton, CO) made a sweet pass to Hency to put Stanford up 2-0 (86:55). It was Hency's first collegiate goal on The Farm.
The Cardinal outshot the Black Knights 8-4 on the evening.
Junior keeper Andrew Kartunen (1-1-1) was superb in goal for Stanford, playing all 90 minutes. It was the eighth career shutout for Kartunen as a Cardinal and second on the year.
The Cardinal are back in action tomorrow when they face UAB (5-2-0) at 7 p.m. at Maloney Field. California (6-0-1) will take on Army (1-7-0) in the early game at 4:30 p.m.
