Ask Austin A Question

Stanford, Calif. - Freshman infielder/righthanded pitcher Austin Yount will answer your questions when he stops by the gostanford.com with Alex Gyr on the microphone.

His session continues a series of regular chats with Stanford Baseball players and coaches throughout the 2006 campaign. If you have some questions for Austin ahead of time, please feel free to post them now and we will save them for his arrival on Thursday, or feel free to join the live chat session when it begins at 10:15 am, PT.

Yount has seen limited action both in the field and on the mound in his first campaign at Stanford. Austin became the first player in 12 seasons to record both a win and hit a home run in the same season, doing both in the opening series versus Cal State Fullerton.

A native of Paradise Valley, Arizona, Yount will be traveling to his home state as a collegiate baseball player for the first time. He is the nephew of Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Robin Yount and the son of minor leaguer Larry Yount.

yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: Hello everybody I here and ready to answer questions.
Ron: What is the best way (workout/exercise) to increase velocity?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: I would say doing long toss everyday would proabably be the best thing for your arm and likely increase velocity.
Harry: Is it bad for pitchers to crack their elbows?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: Yeah I dont think it is the best thing for your arm.
Bridget Foley (Tucson, Arizona): Hey Austin!! I can't wait for you to come down to tucson, I miss you so, so much and I know it will be like old times. What's been the biggest difference between high school and college baseball so far?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: Yeah Im excited to go to Tucson also. The biggest difference between high school and college baseball so far has been that there are no bad teams. Everyone is very good and any team can win on any day.
Scottsdale: I was just wondering do u think your brother will be able to go to stanford and fill your shoes
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: My brother is a very talented baseball player and does well in school. I dont think he needs to worry about filling my shoes, I think pretty soon I might have to try to fill his.
Javy (San Ramon): You started out the year so hot, what happen? It seems like you're not getting your front foot down early enough at the plate. One the mound, your hips don't look as linear as they used to. How're you going to improve?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: I am not sure, I guess thats just baseball. I will try your advice and hopefully I will improve.
Dale (Cleveland): Why do you think Stanford has struggled so much this season??
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: I am not sure, we are an extremely talented team. I think we can turn it around though.
Tim (Durham): What was it like playing high school baseball with phenom teamates such as Tim Sherlock and Cory Bannister?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: It was truly an honor playing baseball with those two oustanding young men. I get the priveledge of playing baseball with Cory again starting next year when he comes to Stanford.
Brad (Tempe): Have you acquired a new nickname at Stanford?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: No, I really dont have any new nicknames and my old nicknames are not really in use anymore.
Charles (Scottsdale): Are you confident that Stanford will continue its streak of making a regional this year?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: I think it is too early to tell. We just have to play one game at a time and we will see where we end up.
Ryan (Nashville): Do you have any regrets choosing to attend Stanford rather than Vanderbilt?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: I have no regrets at all. Stanford is a great school with a great baseball program. It has been everything I hoped it would be.
Philadelphia: When did you make the transition to high socks? and for what reason?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: I made the transition to high socks about a week ago. I did it just to mix things up a little.
Mike (Palo Alto): Austin, best of luck this weekend. Let's go get the series. Do you think this team will get to a Regional and, if so, why?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: Thanks Mike. I think we definitely can because we have the talent to win. We just have to concentrate on winning one game at a time.
Robyn (Stanford): What was the best advice you received from your father and your uncle (two great baseball influences)?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: Both my father and my uncle have stressed the mental part of the game. The best advice they gave me has always been to play smart and play your game.
san fran: i'm a huge fan austin... i was just wondering what you think is the hardest part of baseball?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: The hardest part of baseball is dealing with failure. In hitting you fail more than you succeed no matter how good you are.
crocodile (palo alto): why is there a big dark green spot in right field? are there any legends on the team about this?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: The dark green spot has been a mystery since the first day of practice. There are many differnet ideas about the "spot", but they are mostly just urban legends.
Craig (Palo Alto): Are you guys looking forward to playing in some warm weather this weekend? Best of luck and take the series.
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: Yeah we cant wait for the warm weather, although its been nice here the last couple of days.
Felix (Austin TX): Austin good luck to you and the Cardinal going forward we do believe that you will do much better in the second half and always appreciate the effort given. Who is faster you or Michael Taylor?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: Thanks Felix I think we will do better also. Its pretty well known on the team that I am faster than Michael, but he is working hard to improve his speed so he can beat me.
dave (chicago): How do you balance school, baseball, and your social life? can you have all 3?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: It can be tough sometimes, but we find time to have all three.
Tenny, New York: Austin, There seems to be quality across the PAC 10 this year unlike in years past and I applaud you and your team for their efforts as students and athletes, but do you feel it is a disadvantage playing against opponents whom just really play ball?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: I dont think it is a disadvantage because we still put the same amount of time into baseball as other teams.
Jake (colorado springs): what are some of your favorite things to do outside of baseball?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: I enjoy playing golf and I love to snowboard in the winter.
ben (denver): can you still have a social life there with baseball? do you have time for a girlfriend and hanging out with your friends?
yount-94.jpgspacer.gifAustin Yount: We can still have social lives. It just takes time management and once you get used to it, it is not too difficult.
