Tucson, Ariz. - Stanford (17-15, 3-7 Pac-10) snapped a five-game Pac-10 losing streak with a 10-6 win over Arizona (15-20, 3-7 Pac-10) in the opener of a three-game series at Kindall Field on Friday. Brent Milleville (3-5, 2B, HR, RBI) and Ryan Seawell (3-6, 2B, SB, 2 RBI) had three hits each as the Cardinal offense racked up 16 total to win its second straight game overall. Greg Reynolds (3-3) earned the victory despite allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over the first 6.0 innings. David Stringer picked up his first collegiate save by holding the Wildcats scoreless over the final 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out five.
"It was nice for our bats to break out again tonight," said Stanford head coach Mark Marquess. "We've been starting to hit the ball better as a team over the last couple of games."
Michael Taylor (2-4, 2B), John Hester (2-4), Jason Castro (2-5, 2 RBI) and Chris Minaker (2-5, RBI) added two hits each for the Cardinal.
"This is big for us," said Seawell. "We just have to believe that this is going to turn around, and I think it's starting to now. All we can do is keep working hard."
Stanford trailed 6-5 after five innings before scoring five unanswered runs to end the game.
The Cardinal erased the only Arizona lead of the contest with a three-run sixth. Milleville started the rally with a leadoff double and scored on Seawell's RBI double two batters later to tie the game at 6-6. Stanford took the lead for good when pinch-hitter Jim Rapoport singled in Seawell and the Cardinal got its final run of the inning when Chris Lewis brought home Rapoport with a two-out bases loaded infield single on a hot shot off the glove of Arizona third baseman Colt Sedbrook.
Stanford added two insurance runs in the seventh when Milleville led off with a homer, before Seawell restarted the rally with a one-out single and scored on Minaker's two-out RBI double a couple of hitters later.
Stanford got off to a great start in the game by hitting around in a four-run second inning. Taylor and Hester started the rally with back-to-back singles and Taylor came around to score on the next play when losing pitcher Preston Guilmet (6.0 IP, 13 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO) threw the ball away at first on Chris Lewis' sacrifice bunt. Castro followed with an RBI single before Milleville singled to load the bases. Lewis came home on Cord Phelps' RBI fielders' choice and Seawell's RBI single brought home Castro with the final run of the inning.
Arizona cut the score in half with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second. Jason Donald led off with a single and the Wildcats ended up with runners on second and third after Seawell dropped a line drive hit to him in centerfield by Bill Rhinehart. Donald scored on a wild pitch by Reynolds before Derek Decater's sacrifice fly two batters later plated Rhinehart.
Stanford came back with a run in the top of the third when Taylor led off with a double, Hester walked and Castro singled through the left side two batters later.
A long two-run homer by Brad Glenn cut the Cardinal lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth. Rhinehart, who had singled prior to Glenn, also scored on his team-leading fifth long ball of the season.
The Wildcats took their only lead of the game in the fifth on a dramatic play when Brad Boyer stole home with two outs. T.J. Steele started the rally with the single and moved to second when Boyer walked. Sedbrook's sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third before Steele scored on a groundout RBI by David Plante to tie the score before Boyer raced home just ahead of Reynolds' first pitch to Donald for his 13th stolen base of the campaign.
Donald (2-5) was the only Arizona player with more than one hit, while Glenn was lone Wildcat with more than a single RBI with his two-run homer.
Stanford and Arizona continue the series on Saturday (6 pm, MST/PDT) and Sunday (12 pm, MST/PDT). Saturday's scheduled pitching matchup features Stanford LHP Jeremy Bleich (2-2, 2.08) against Arizona LHP Brad Mills (3-3, 4.09). RHP Matt Manship (1-4, 5.31) is slated to start on the hill for Stanford on Sunday against Arizona LHP David Coulon (1-3, 7.00).
