Singles Results
Stanford, Calif. - And then there was one. After the first two rounds at the NCAA Women's Singles Championship, seven of the top-eight seeds remained, but on Friday, the wind kicked up and it wasn't just leaves that were falling. With the field narrowed down to the top-eight, only second-seeded Kristi Miller of Georgia Tech remains from the top-8 seeds. Six of the remaining eight players were un-seeded and Theresa Logar of Stanford is the lone 9-16 seed still standing.
The biggest upset of the day came from Southern California's Lindsey Nelson defeated top-seeded Audra Cohen of Miami, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, but upsets kept coming, as VCU's Tatsiana Uvarova knocked off No. 3 seed Daniela Bercek of Duke, Cal's Suzi Babos took defending NCAA Champion and No. 4 Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor, Stanford's Logar took out No. 6 seed Amanda Fink of USC, William & Mary's Megan Moulton-Levy upset No. 7 seed Alice Barnes of Stanford, and UCLA's Riza Zalameda knocked out two-time NCAA Champion and No. 8 seed Amber Liu.
Stanford is the only school with multiple players in the draw, with Logar and Celia Durkin. Five of the eight quarterfinalists are from Pac-10 schools, with Cal, Stanford UCLA and USC all having one remaining player.
In doubles, top-seeded Barnes and Anne Yelsey of Stanford survived another close call, using all three sets for the second day in a row, this time to get past Helena Besovic and Ana Cetnik of TCU. Second-seeded Melissa Applebaum and Cohen of Miami got off to a slow start, but turned the match around for the 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Saturday's competition will begin with singles quarterfinals at noon, while the last doubles quarterfinals are set to go on the courts at 4 p.m.
