STANFORD, Calif.- In a battle of the Pac-10's top two squads, No. 7 California defeated Stanford 2-0 on Friday afternoon in Berkeley behind goals from Pat Marion and Jacob Wilson.
Stanford falls to 6-6-3 overall and 4-2-1 in league play while No. 7 California improves to 11-3-1 and 6-1-1 in the Pac-10.
The Cardinal was outshot 19-7 in the contest, led by Galen Thompson and Brant Bishop with two shots apiece.
The Bears controlled the first half, having the edge in possession and outshooting the Cardinal, 9-3. In the 44th minute, Luke Sassano set up California's first goal, sending a cross in the box to Marion, who scored past Stanford goalkeeper John Moore for a 1-0 halftime lead.
In the 53rd minute, Hatzke and Purdy assisted on an insurance goal by Wilson, who headed in his goal past Moore from point-blank range.
Moore was impressive in goal for the Cardinal, registering 10 saves despite the loss.
Stanford next travels to UCLA on Friday, Oct. 27.
