STANFORD, Calif.- For the second time this year, Stanford played No. 10 UCLA to a draw in men's soccer action as both teams battled to a 1-1 tie on Friday night in Los Angeles.
The Bruins (9-4-3, 4-2-2 Pac-10) equalized with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, sending the game into overtime. UCLA took the only two shots of the first overtime session while Stanford recorded the only attempt in the second overtime, resulting in a 1-1 tie.
Stanford (6-6-4, 4-2-2 Pac-10) continued its late season surge, having lost only twice in its last eight matches. The Cardinal and UCLA entered Friday night's battle in a tie for second place in the Pac-10 standings, and both squads were looking to move up after San Diego State upset conference leader California earlier in the day.
Ryan Oblak's second goal of the year put the Cardinal up 1-0 in the 68th minute, scoring off an Alex Kozachenko corner kick. Oblak headed it towards the goal, and it deflected off UCLA defender Brad Rusin into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
In the 73rd minute, UCLA's Michael Stephens had a good look in front of the goal, but his hard shot hit the back of a Stanford defender, preventing the tying score. At 85:48, Chance Myers sent in a cross from the right side to David Estrada in the box, and Estrada's shot found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season and his fourth goal in his last five games.
Stanford had one last opportunity to take the lead before the end of regulation, but a Galen Thompson shot went wide with two minutes left.
Stanford, led by Dan Shapiro's three shot attempts, was outshot 10-8 by UCLA.
John Moore recorded one save in goal for the Cardinal, holding the UCLA attack in check.
Stanford squares off against San Diego State on Sunday, Oct. 29. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. Stanford, UCLA and San Diego State all have totaled 14 points in Pac-10 play while first-place California has 18.
