Stanford, Calif. - A goal by Peter Lowry on a penalty kick was the difference as No. 18 Santa Clara defeated the Stanford Cardinal, 1-0, this evening at Maloney Field before a crowd of 730 on opening night for both teams. The Broncos improve to 1-0 on the year while the Cardinal are 0-1.
Lowry took the shot in the 48th minute early in the second period.
Santa Clara took seven shots on goal during the game while the Cardinal recorded three, including Galen Thompson's shot on goal in the 39th minute of the first period.
The Broncos took three corner kicks during the contest to Stanford's one. Redshirt freshman Brent Stewart was in goal for the Cardinal, making two saves on the night.
Thompson led Stanford with two shots on the night while sophomore T.J. Novak tallied one.
The Broncos were led byt Amaechi Igwe and Peter Lowry who each had two shots on the evening.
Stanford is back in action at San Francisco this Sunday evening at 7 p.m.
