STANFORD, Calif.- Craig Henderson scored the game-winning goal following a deflection in the 76th minute, lifting Dartmouth past Stanford 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the adidas Cal Legacy Classic in Berkeley.
The Cardinal, now 2-4-2 on the year, finished third in this weekend's tournament, hosted by champion California. Dartmouth (2-2-2) placed second overall while Sacramento State was fourth.
Dartmouth held a 7-3 edge in shot attempts as both teams battled evenly for the majority of the game. Junior Dan Shapiro (New Haven, Ct.) came off the bench to lead the Cardinal with two shots while senior Galen Thompson (Denver, Colo.) added the other.
After battling to a scoreless first half, both sides continued to play well defensively through much of the second. Dartmouth was able to get on the scoreboard at the 76:28 mark, as Henderson corralled a ball that was deflected by Stanford freshman goalkeeper John Moore (Chino Hills, Calif.). Henderson's shot from 16 yards out was on target, giving the Big Green a 1-0 win.
Moore, who was coming off a 2-0 shutout performance against Sacramento State on Friday afternoon, made three saves.
Senior Michael Brown (Clinton, Ms.) and junior Kyle Hency (Waterloo, Ill.) represented the Cardinal on the All-Tournament team.
Stanford returns to Maloney Field next week for a two-game homestand which kicks off the start of Pac-10 play. The Cardinal host San Diego State on Sept. 22 (7:30 p.m.) before taking on UCLA two days later (2:30 p.m.).
