Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford Women's Lacrosse program is excited to host the 2007 Sling It! Western States Tournament for the seventh year in a row. Tournament games begin Saturday April 8th at 8:00 a.m., and conclude Sunday, April 9th at 1:00 p.m. The Cardinal kicks off the lacrosse weekend, taking on MPSF opponent Denver tonight at 7:00 p.m.

Stanford does not play in the Western States Tournament, but instead hosts three divisions of play including 27 teams over the weekend. Tournament action features high schools in two divisions: the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division and the non-CIF division including teams from Oregon and Washington. Collegiate and post-collegiate players compete in the open club division.

Close to 600 players, referees, and fans will visit the Stanford campus for this weekend's tournament. Games will be played on the athletic fields adjacent to El Camino Real, including Maloney Stadium, Maloney practice fields, IM South fields, and the Astroturf.

Although this year's tournament falls over the Easter and Passover holidays, decreasing the scope of the tournament by half, Stanford stays dedicated to continue playing a major role in promoting lacrosse to the community. Head coach Michele Uhlfelder, along with her players and assistants Kylee Reade, Randall Goldsborough, and Adam Norton, have worked hard to fulfill the program's mission of being the hub of lacrosse on the west coast. With Stanford Lacrosse hosting large events, recruiting national players, and earning a coveted spot in the NCAA tournament last year, the game's exposure on the West Coast has sky-rocketed.

"Our team will put on its volunteer hat versus our cleats this weekend so that we can continue our dedication to hosting events where we can give other players, coaches, refs, and fans a great experience in the game," Uhlfelder said.
