BERKELEY, Calif. - One week after coming back to earn a draw against the nation's top-ranked team, the Stanford men's soccer team let a prime opportunity to capitalize on the momentum gained slip through their hands as they suffered a 1-0 setback against Wisconsin at the adidas Cal Legacy Classic in Berkeley on Friday afternoon.
The Cardinal (0-1-1) return home to Laird Q. Cagan Stadium Sunday afternoon, seeking their first win of the season as they host the Penn Quakers in a 1 p.m. match.
Friday's contest saw the teams combine for only 13 shots, with the Cardinal holding the edge by an 8-5 margin, led by Brant Bishop's (Parkville, Mo.) three shots. Yet only the Badgers managed to find the back of the net, as Victor Diaz took a pass from Taylor Waspi and, after driving down the middle, let loose a shot toward the bottom far post that got by Stanford keeper John Moore (Chino Hills, Calif.) at the 22:54 mark.
The Stanford defense would clamp down the rest of the way, allowing the Badgers only two more shots for the rest of the afternoon, while Moore made a pair of saves.
Cardinal attackers got off seven more shots the rest of the way, but only Thiago Sa Freire (Manchester, Mo.) was able to put one on frame. That shot, in the 83rd minute, was saved by Badger keeper Alex Horwath, who earned his second shutout of the season.
