The Stanford men's soccer team defeated Princeton Friday evening by a score of 3-1, improving their record to 2-2-2 on the year. Freshman Bobby Warshaw tallied his third goal of the season, while senior Dan Shapiro scored his second and third goals on the year. The Cardinal outshot Princeton 16 to five as they recorded their highest goal total so far this season.
The Stanford attack dominated the first half, recording eight shots compared to just one for Princeton. The Cardinal got on the board at the 27 minute mark on a goal by forward Shapiro, his second of the season, grabbing an early 1-0 lead. Freshman Bobby Warshaw passed the ball to Shapiro who dribbled to the top of the box and beat the keeper far post with a strong shot.
Both offenses came out gunning in the second half. Stanford was the first to find the back of the net in the half as Shapiro fired a shot that beat the keeper in the upper corner, for his second goal of the game. Princeton scored their first goal of the game after Stanford goalkeeper John Moore left the keeper box to deflect a shot, which ended up flying over to Teddy Schneider who headed it into the empty net making the score 2-1. Just five minutes later it was the Cardinal punching another one in as Warshaw drilled a shot to the upper right corner off a pass from Michael Strickland. Both teams had a couple more chances, but were unable to capitalize as Stanford defeated Princeton by a final score of 3-1.
The Cardinal continue their homestand as they face College of Charleston on Friday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
