The Stanford men's soccer team (3-2-2) was victorious as they defeated Davidson (1-6-0) by a score of 2-0. With a tournament record of 2-0, the Cardinal claim the Stanford Nike Invitational championship over Cal based on score differential. Dan Shapiro scored his fourth goal of the season and his third in two games, while Tom Montgomery also netted a shot in the Cardinal win. Goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen recorded his second shutout of the season.
Most of the game was played on the Davidson half of the field, with the Stanford attack pressing forward. The Cardinal recorded 19 shots, eight of which were on frame, while Davidson was held to just two shots on the day.
The Cardinal attack was relentless in the first half as they fired nine shots, five of which were on goal. In the 14th minute Shapiro took a shot that was blocked by a defender, but the ball bounced to Bobby Warshaw who booted a shot on frame that was saved by Wildcat keeper Robby Goldsberry. Less than a minute later, Thiago Sa Freire had a good look at the goal, but his shot was again saved by Goldsberry. Shapiro once again had an opportunity with his shot from the top of the box, but Goldsberry was on top of his game as he made his fifth save of the half to keep the score tied at 0-0.
The second half saw more of the same from Stanford, as they came out firing. After only four minutes had expired, Brant Bishop crossed a ball to Shapiro who headed it past the keeper into the lefet corner, giving the Cardinal a 1-0 lead. In the 66th minute, Thiago Sa Freire swung out wide and passed the ball into the center box as Tom Montgomery was able to get a foot on it and send it into the lower left corner for the final goal of the game, making the score 2-0. Stanford goalkeeper Kartunen didn't see much action as he was not required to make any saves in his second shut out of the season.
Stanford will face College of Charleton on Friday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m.in Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
