The top-ranked Cardinal men's golf team got the 2007-08 season off to a successful start on Tuesday, finishing the first round of the 2007 Topy Cup U.S.-Japan Intercollegiate Golf Championship with a one-stroke lead in the 10-team field. Stanford shot 6-under, 282, in the opening round of the tournament that includes four other American teams and is taking place at the Tanagura Country Club in Tanagura, Japan.
Stanford's Rob Grube shot 5-under-par, 67 on the first day and stands in a four-way tie for first with Clemson's Ben Martin, Alabama's Joseph Sykora and Yosuke Tsukada from Nagoya University of Commerce. Freshman Sihwan Kim is tied for ninth, after shooting a 2-under, 70, in his first collegiate round. Rounding out the Cardinal players are junior Daniel Lim (72, t-18), sophomore Joseph Bramlett (73, t-22) and junior Dogde Kemmer (77, t-49).
In the team standings, Stanford (282) is closely followed by Tohoku Fukushi University (283) in second place and Alabama and Duke (284) in third. In fifth is Nihon University (289), followed by Chuo Gakuin University (291), Clemson (292), Senshu University (293), Nagoya University of Commerce (294) and Kyushu Tokai University (303).
Stanford will continue action at the Topy Cup tomorrow, Sept. 5. The tournament concludes with a final round on Thursday, Sept. 6. Japanese teams have won 12 of the last 16 Topy Cup titles, with New Mexico being the most recent American winner in 2004.
