The No. 1 Stanford men's golf team stands in second place after Wednesday's second round at the 2007 Topy Cup U.S.-Japan Intercollegiate Golf Championship in Tanagura, Japan. The Cardinal shot a 12-under, 276 on the second day of the tournament but trails No. 2 Alabama by one stroke going into tomorrow's final round.
Stanford freshman Sihwan Kim shot a 5-under, 67 in his second collegiate round and stands tied for fourth with a two-day total of 137. Senior Rob Grube recorded a par, 72 in the second round and is tied for sixth at 139. Rounding out the Cardinal players are sophomore Joseph Bramlett (141, t-11), junior Daniel Lim (141, t-11) and junior Dodge Kemmer (154, t-54). Joseph Sykora of Alabama leads the field with an 11-under, 133.
In the team standings, Stanford (558) is just one stroke behind Alabama (557), and one stroke ahead of Tohoku Fukushi University (559). Duke is in fourth place (568) followed by Nihon University (570), Chuo Gakuin University (582), Clemson (582), Nagoya University of Commerce (593), Senshu University (594) and Kyushu Tokai University (596).
The Topy Cup concludes with a final round tomorrow, Sept. 6. Japanese teams have won 12 of the last 16 Topy Cup titles, with New Mexico being the most recent American winner in 2004.
