No. 5 Stanford Battles Arizona State to 0-0 Tie

Stanford finished its first Pac-10 road trip by playing Arizona State to a 0-0 tie at Soccer Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. Sophomore Kelley O'Hara gave the Cardinal a spark by getting off six shots, including three on goal, but Stanford was unable to breakthrough in the 110 minutes of action. The draw moved the Cardinal record to 11-2-3 on the season and 2-1-2 in the Pac-10. The Sun Devils moved to 9-7-1 on the season and 3-2-1 in Pac-10 play.

O'Hara got the Cardinal off to a quick start by unleashing three shots on net in the first nine minutes of action. Stanford soon after got two quick corner kicks, but was unable to convert on either of them. To end the half the Cardinal got two shots off in the 41st minute by Kristin Stannard and O'Hara, but Sun Devils goalkeeper Brianna Silvestri was able to corral both attempts. Senior Erica Holland made her first start since the Sept. 14 game against Missouri and made one save in the first half. The half ended with the teams tied at 0-0.

The second half remained a defensive struggle with Stanford taking four shots to the Sun Devils three. Four different Cardinal players took shots in the period, but couldn't find the back of the net. The Stanford defense came out strong all match and recorded their seventh shutout of the season. For Holland it was her third shutout of the season in six games after making four saves in the match.

The game was played under a scorching sun that pushed the temperature up to 97 at points throughout the competition.

The Cardinal will return to the field next Friday, Nov. 2 when they host the University of Washington Huskies at 7:00p.m. They will also host the Cougars of Washington State on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 12:00 p.m. Both matches will be played at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium on the campus of Stanford University.
