The Stanford men's soccer team (6-5-5, 3-2-2 Pac-10) shutout San Diego State for a 3-0 victory this afternoon at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. Stanford attempted 14 shots, nine of them on goal, while the Aztecs were only able to record four shots. Kyle Hency led the Cardinal charge with two goals and four shots, while Bobby Warshaw put all three of his shots on goal.
Stanford came out with lots of energy in the first half as the offense controlled most of the period. The Cardinal outshot San Diego State six to one, with five of the shots on goal. Stanford struck quickly in the 13th minute as Scott Bolkan headed a pass over the Aztec keeper to the far post, while Hency was able to run underneath the headed ball and fire a shot into the right corner for his third goal of the season, giving the Cardinal a 1-0 lead. It didn't take long for Stanford to strike again, as Michael Strickland found the ball at his feet inside the box and booted a shot into the upper corner for his first goal of the season, giving Stanford a 2-0 advantage. The Cardinal defense took over from that point, stifling any opportunity that arose for San Diego State, as the half ended with a score of 2-0.
Though the Cardinal had a two goal lead, they came out in the second half like the match was tied. They fired eight shots in the period, and held San Diego State to just three. In the 60th minute Hency received a pass inside the Aztec box and managed to flick the ball just over the keepers outstretched arms and into the net for his second goal of the game, and his third in the last two games. Stanford continued to play stout defense as San Diego State was unable to put a shot on frame once again in the second half. The match ended by a score of 3-0, giving the Cardinal its second victory in a row.
Stanford returns to action on Friday, November 9 as they travel to take on Oregon State at 7:30 p.m., before facing off against Washington on Sunday, November 11 at 2:30 p.m.
