Warrensburg, Mo. - Ten Stanford wrestlers picked up wins, four placed and seniors Tanner Gardner and Josh Zupancic won titles in their first tournament of the year today at the Central Missouri Open in Warrensburg, Mo.
Gardner was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler after pinning his first four opponents and topping Oklahoma State's Ben Ashmore, 4-0, in the 125-pound championship match. Gardner pinned the most opponents in the least time for the day, and came away with his seventh career tournament title and third at the Central Missouri Open. Gardner also won titles at the event in 2004 and 2005.
At 157 pounds, Zupancic picked up four decisions and a technical fall on his way to a 5-0 record and his second title at the Open. The Cardinal senior claimed a 5-3 overtime victory over Oklahoma State's Newley McSpadden in the championship bout. Zupancic also won the 149-pound title at the event in 2005.
At 184 pounds, sophomore Zack Giesen went 4-1 on the day to take third place. Giesen won two matches before dropping an overtime decision to Central Missouri's Jeremy Hudson. The Grants Pass, Ore. native battled back with two wins in the consolation bracket, and downed Central Oklahoma's Heath Jolley, 8-1 in the third place match.

Justin Paulsen (133 pounds) and Peter Miller (165 pounds) both came within one match of placing with 3-2 records. Paulsen put up a notable fight against top-ranked Coleman Scott of Oklahoma State, battling the three-time All-American to a three-point decision.

"Overall, the weekend was a success," said Head Coach Kerry McCoy. "We did some things well, and some things not so well, but we definitely got a lot better. The fact that Oklahoma State was at this tournament made us realize that we can compete with the best. Now, we just need to get back and get ready for this weekend, where we'll have a good chance to see some conference competition."
Stanford returns to action next Sunday, competing at the Fullerton Open in Southern California.
