The Stanford men's soccer team (7-6-5, 4-4-2 Pac-10) defeated No. 20 Cal (11-5-2, 6-3-1 Pac-10) by a score of 1-0 at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium in the final regular season game of the season. Despite being outshot 15 to 11, the Cardinal managed to find the back of the net while Stanford keeper John Moore pitched a shutout.
The first half was evenly matched, with Stanford taking seven shots and Cal attempting five. Stanford keeper Moore recorded two saves in the period. Bobby Warshaw led the Cardinal attack as he attempted three shots, but was unable to connect on any of his chances. Dan Shapiro recorded the Cardinal's only shot on goal in the first half, but Cal keeper Stefan Frei was in position for the save. Both teams put nice touches on the ball to set up scoring looks, however neither team managed to capitalize as the half ended with a 0-0 score.
Despite being outshot ten to four in the second half, Stanford was able to capitalize. In the 62nd minute, the ball came to Kyle Hency with his back to the Cal goal as he softly pushed it to the side for a running Thiago Sa Freire who fired a shot into the upper left hand corner of the net, giving Stanford a 1-0 lead. Cal managed to put two shots on goal in the second half, but Moore was able to make the saves to preserve the shutout and give Stanford the 1-0 victory.
