Stanford Pins Six to Demolish Wagner, 52-0

Jan. 6, 2008

New York, NY - Stanford wrestlers collected six pins and shut out an opponent for the first time in recent history tonight, posting a 52-0 rout over the Wagner Seahawks. Led by freshman Blair Matsuura's 32-second pin, the Cardinal scored bonus points in nine of the ten bouts and concluded its three-dual day with a perfect record. Stanford finishes the preseason with a 6-1 record, one of the best in program history.

Stanford came out firing from the start. Senior Tanner Gardner (25-1) set the tone with his fourth consecutive pin and third of the day at 125 pounds, sticking Wagner's Nick Keshecki midway through the second period (4:00). Matsuura, a true freshman, followed suit, pinning the first opponent of his career in just 32 seconds. Matsuura (3-8) bested the Seahawks' Tyler Harmer to give Stanford a 12-0 lead after just two bouts.

At 141 pounds, freshman Max Rosefigura (9-5) scored a late escape to narrowly defeat Mike Tutunjian, 8-7. Redshirt freshman Lucas Espericueta (17-7) dominated Patrick Larkin in the ensuing 149-pound bout, and came away with an 18-2 technical fall.

At 157 pounds, 16th-ranked Josh Zupancic (23-5) picked up the Cardinal's third pin of the night and the second in under a minute. Zupancic put Sean Quinn on his back in 59 seconds and gave the Cardinal a 26-0 lead. Sophomore Peter Miller (12-6) continued the slaughter with a 15-5 major decision over Larry Peotter at 165 pounds.

At 174 pounds, junior Luke Feist (5-6) nabbed Stanford's fourth pin of the match, pasting Wagner's Peter Morano to the mat in 4:24. Sophomore Zack Giesen (16-5) then saw his first action of the day at 184 pounds, and topped Eddie Broderick by major decision, 15-4.

Sophomore Jake Johnson (17-7) picked up the fifth Stanford pin at 197 pounds, finishing off Anthony Interiano in 6:02. Senior heavyweight Phillip Doerner (15-10) then put an exclamation point on the win with the Cardinal's sixth pin, sticking John Graeffe in 6:01.

The Cardinal returns to the mat on Jan. 18, beginning the 2008 Pac-10 season against Boise State and UC Davis in Davis, Calif.
