Stanford, Calif. - Hawaii (10-19) scored three times in the top of the ninth inning to hand No. 13 Stanford (13-8) a 5-2 non-conference loss at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond on Tuesday. Jonathan Hee (2-3, 2B, 3 RBI) drove in three of the Rainbows' five runs, including the game-winner with a sacrifice fly that plated Sean Montplaisir (2-4) in the top of the ninth.
Montplaisir started Hawaii's winning rally with a one-out single off losing pitcher Alex Pracher, who allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning. Derek DuPree then singled him to third to put him into position for Hee. The Rainbows would two insurance runs in the inning. DuPree moved into scoring position by stealing second and after a Brandon Haislet walk scored on an RBI single by Jeffrey Van Doornum. Haislet moved over to third on a wild pitch and scored on Stanford third baseman Adam Gaylord's ensuing throwing error.
Hawaii reliever Jayson Kramer (2.0 IP, 2 SO) picked up the victory by retiring all six batters he faced. Kramer came into the game after a leadoff triple by Sean Ratliff with the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth and left him stranded there as the go-ahead run before recording a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.
Stanford also had the bases loaded in the sixth and runners on first and second in seventh with just one out on both occasions and did not score."We had a couple of opportunities to score tonight, but they came up with big pitches and won those spots," said Stanford head coach Mark Marquess. "You have to give them credit."
Ratliff (3-4, 2B, 3B, RBI) and Molina (3-4, 2B) had three hits each and extended their hitting streaks to 11 and seven games, respectively, both season-highs. Cord Phelps also extended his hit streak to a career-high-tying and season-high eight in a row.
Greg Garcia (3-4) and Van Doornum (3-5, RBI) had three hits each for the Rainbows. DuPree (2-4, SB) joined Hee and Montplaisir with a pair of hits each as the Rainbow outhit the Cardinal, 13-9.
Hawaii snapped a six-game losing skid with the victory, while Stanford had its three-game win streak ended.
Stanford will host top-ranked Arizona State in a crucial three-game Pac-10 series at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond this Friday-Sunday, April 4-6 (6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PT). The Sun Devils are 26-1 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-10, while the Cardinal is one of four teams a single game back in the conference standings with a 2-1 league mark.
