Hill's Double-Double Paces 75-67 Victory; Dawkins Wins Debut

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- Lawrence Hill had 22 points and 11 rebounds to help Stanford beat Yale 75-67 Friday night in the non-conference opener for both teams.

Anthony Goods added 19 points for the Cardinal, including three consecutive 3-point shots to help put Stanford up 50-41 with 11:33 left.

It was the first victory for Stanford head coach Johnny Dawkins, a former standout player and assistant coach at Duke. He took over the Pac-10 program when Trent Johnson went to LSU.

Alex Zampier played all 40 minutes and finished with 15 points for Yale. Ross Morin added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Stanford's biggest lead was 13 points, 66-53, with 3:26 left. The Cardinal shot 52 percent, 13 of 25, from the floor in the second half.

Stanford grabbed the lead for good 1 minute into the second half, 34-33, after the lead changed hands 11 times in the first half.

Stanford hosts Cal State Northridge on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the home opener at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford improved to 6-0 all-time against Yale. Last year at Maples Pavilion, the Cardinal defeated the Bulldogs 72-61.
Stanford improved to 77-17 in season openers and has now won 20 of its last 21 lid-lifters.
Of the 17 head coaches in program history, only three (Andy Kerr, E.P. Hunt, Mike Montgomery) suffered losses in their Stanford debut.
Through the first nine minutes of Friday's game, 12 different Stanford players had already seen at least one minute of court time.
For the first time ever, Stanford received at least 10 points from Mitch Johnson, Anthony Goods and Lawrence Hill in the same game.

After averaging just 5.8 minutes per game last year, Josh Owens played a career-high 32 minutes and finished with eight points, six rebounds and a thunderous dunk at the 15:53 mark of the second period to give Stanford a 42-37 lead.
The game featured seven ties and 13 lead changes.
Stanford missed its first six shot attempts of the contest before a dunk from Lawrence Hill at the 16:42 mark.
