Stanford Tops Cal Baptist To Nab First Win

Nov. 22, 2008

Riverside, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team outlasted California Baptist tonight to earn its first win of the 2008-09 season. Redshirt freshman Nick Amuchastegui (8-1) came through for Stanford in the final bout of the night, picking up a major decision to clinch the 25-18 Cardinal victory.

Stanford won bouts in six of the nine contested weight classes. The Cardinal forfeited at 184 pounds, marking the fifth straight dual that Stanford has wrestled shorthanded.

The Cardinal is now 1-4 on the year while Cal Baptist stands at 1-1.

The action started at 174 pounds, where Stanford freshman Victor Haug (4-5) crushed CBU freshman Jarid Price, 21-4. The technical fall was the first of Haug's young career and gave Stanford a 5-0 opening lead.

The Cardinal lost ground with its forfeit at 184 pounds, but junior Jake Johnson (10-4) wasted no time putting the team back on track. Johnson picked up his team-leading 10th win of the year with a major decision over Cal Baptist's Vince Pezzuto at 197 pounds.

Wrestling his second straight match at heavyweight, Stanford's lone senior, Luke Feist (0-2), was pinned in the second period (4:33) by Dylan Berg. Freshman Matt Sencenbaugh (2-7) then dropped an 8-1 decision to Chauncey Philipps, the seventh-ranked 125-pounder in the NAIA. Philipps' win gave Cal Baptist a 15-9 lead.

Sophomore Porfirio Madrigal (8-4) jumpstarted a fierce Cardinal comeback, however, pinning freshman Andrew Collins in 4:56 in the 133-pound bout. Madrigal, the team's pin leader with four on the year, put Collins on his back as time expired in the second period and knotted the dual at 15-15.

The Lancers took the lead back when Ethan Hall edged Timmy Boone (3-5) at 141 pounds, but Stanford won the final three bouts of the night to storm from behind and win.

At 149 pounds, sophomore Max Rosefigura (5-5) claimed a 5-1 victory over Jarell Price to pull the team back into a tie at 18. Sophomore NCAA qualifier Lucas Espericueta (5-3) then won a battle with Lamar Reed at 157 pounds, 3-1, to give Stanford a 21-18 advantage heading into the final bout.

Amuchastegui didn't waste the opportunity to give his team its first win and dominated freshman CJ Knowland, 14-1, in the decisive 165-pound bout. The victory was the seventh straight for the Stanford redshirt freshman.

The Cardinal will host No. 10 Northwestern on Sunday in its home opener, with the first bout scheduled to start at noon at Burnham Pavilion.
