STANFORD, Calif. - Despite a game-tying second-half goal by Bobby Warshaw, Stanford fell to Sonoma State, 2-1, in a men's soccer exhibition match at Cagan Stadium on Wednesday night.
Warshaw, a sophomore forward, took a pass from Daniel Leon and fought off two defenders to create space and then struck a low right-footed shot just inside the far post.
The goal, in the 48th minute, made up for a 30-yard 20th-minute strike by Sonoma State's Nathan Medina that opened the scoring. However, the Seawolves regained the lead when Davide Furtado's header off Cam Vickers' free kick caromed in off the post in the 78th minute.
Stanford outshot Sonoma State, the defending NCAA Division II Far West Regional champ, by a 14-9 count and forced the Seawolves' goalkeeper, Brook Johnson, into four saves. Warshaw, who led the Cardinal in scoring last year with five goals, had three of the shots. All of them were on goal.
The match was the first of two exhibitions for Stanford before opening the season in earnest with an August 31 match at San Jose State. The next exhibition will be Saturday (7 p.m.) at Cagan Stadium against Sacramento State.
