STANFORD, Calif. - After completing its exhibition season with a 1-0 loss to visiting Sacramento State on Saturday night, the Stanford men's soccer team now prepares for next week's season-opener.
Stanford plays San Jose State on Sunday (7 p.m.), Aug. 31, at Spartan Stadium in its first regular-season match. The Cardinal hopes for better results after dropping both its preseason exhibitions, first to Sonoma State (2-1) and then to the Hornets.
Sacramento State scored in the 51st minute on a shot by Blake Nunes after receiving a pass from Omar Martinez, and Stanford was unable to capitalize on a red-card issued to the Hornets' Fernando Cabadas for a foul on Garrett Gunther in the 82nd minute.
Though the match ended at 1-0 after 90 minutes, an extra 30 were played to allow more players to get game action. Stanford equalized seven minutes into the extra session, with sophomore midfielder Dominique Yahyavi drawing a penalty and converting the ensuing kick to allow the Cardinal to finish the complete 120 minutes with a 1-1 draw.
Stanford and Sacramento State played evenly, completing the 90-minute portion of the contest equal in shots (7-7), corner kicks (3-3) and saves (1-1).
