Greeley, Colo. - The Stanford wrestling team (4-11-1, 0-3 Pac-10) fell to Northern Colorado tonight in a dual meet in Greeley, Colo. In its second contest of a weekend road trip, the Cardinal dropped seven close decisions and fell to the Bears, 25-7.
Redshirt freshman Nick Amuchastegui was one of two winners for the Cardinal, nabbing his eighth consecutive victory at 165 pounds. The rookie from Talent, Ore. bested Daniel Prater in a 13-3 major decision, and improved to21-4 on the year. Now on the longest winning streak of his career, Amuchastegui is tied with Scott Loescher as the ninth-winningest freshman in school history (21 wins).
Senior Luke Feist (15-9) picked up Stanford's second victory at 197 pounds, defeating Northern Colorado's Patrick Carey, 5-1. The win was the 74th of Feist's career, moving him within five wins of ninth place on the program's all-time chart.
The evening began with the 125-pound bout, where Matt Sencenbaugh (6-21) fell by major decision to Northern Colorado's only ranked wrestler, No. 18 Tony Mustari. Mustari scored seven takedowns in the bout and won by a final score of 19-7.
The Bears continued to rally, and soon built a 16-0 advantage on four close decisions. Sophomore Porfirio Madrigal (12-7) lost a dual match for just the second time this year, as a third-period reversal gave Northern Colorado's Casey Cruz the 5-4 edge.
Sophomore Cameron Teitelman (10-13) lost an 8-3 decision to Kenny Hashimoto in the 141-pound bout, and sophomore Max Rosefigura (14-14) fell 9-3 to Mitchell Polkowske in the 149-pound bout.
At 157 pounds, sophomore Lucas Espericueta (21-11) took a 3-1 lead, but allowed Justin Gaethje a takedown with just three seconds remaining in the match to send it to overtime. A sudden victory takedown by Gaethje put the Cardinal in a 16-0 hole.
Amuchastegui halted the Bear momentum with his major decision at 165 pounds, using three takedowns and a first-period near-fall to put Stanford on the board.
In the next bout, freshman Victor Haug (8-15) lost a 4-1 decision to Northern Colorado's Brandon Kammerzell to put the Bears up 19-4 with three matches remaining.
At 184 pounds, Northern Colorado's Ryan Johnson edged Stanford's Jake Johnson (23-13) with a second-period reversal, 3-2. The one-point loss was the Cardinal's second of three on the night and clinched the Northern Colorado victory.
Feist followed with his win, a solid 5-1 showing over Carey that made it 22-7.
Redshirt freshman Matt Winterbourne (1-3) lost the heavyweight match, 3-2, to Justin Tuell to end the night.
The Cardinal takes a week off and will be back on the mat on Jan.30, meeting Oregon State, Portland State and Princeton in Burnham Pavilion.
