Stanford Finishes Fourth At UH-Hilo Invitational

KOHALA COAST, Hawaii - The fifth-ranked Stanford men's golf team shot its best round of the tournament today, an one-under 287, but it wouldn't be enough to overtake the top three teams on the leaderboard as the Cardinal finished the tournament in fourth with a three-round total of eight-over-par 872.

Second-ranked Southern California captured the title with a 13-under-par 851, followed by Washington at two-under and TCU at six-over. 

No. 74 Steve Ziegler shot 71 in each of his three rounds to finish at three-under-par 213 and in a three-way tie for seventh place.  Two other Stanford golfers, David Chung and Sihwan Kim, cracked the top-30 on the leaderboard, as Chung railled with a 69 in his final round to tie for 15th and Kim carded a six-over-par 222 to settle into a tie for 30th.  Also, Daniel Lim finished out the tournament strong after a disappointing first two rounds, notching a 71 in his final round.

Washington's Nick Taylor took the individual crown, shooting a six-under-par 210 in his three rounds.

The Cardinal, who have now finished in the top 10 in all tournaments played this year, added their fourth top-5 performance of the season with the result of the UH-Hilo Invitational.  Stanford will next travel to Southern California for the USC/Ashworth Collegiate Invitational from Feb. 23-24.

KOHALA COAST, Hawaii - The fifth-ranked Stanford men's golf team moved into a tie for fourth place today at the UH-Hilo Invitational after shooting a three-over-par 291. Combined with yesterday's score of 294, the Cardinal now sit in a draw with Texas Tech at nine-over-par 585.

Second-ranked Southern California overtook the team lead after shooting a four-under-par 284, while No. 11 Washington, who finished yesterday's first round in the lead after a round of 281, cooled off with a 292 in the second round to settle into second place. Stanford trails third-place No. 48 Colorado by one stroke. Three Huskies are in the top-four spots, including Richard Lee who is now on top of the leaderboard at six-under.

No. 74 Steve Ziegler hit his second consecutive round of 71 and moved into a tie for fifth-place at two-under-par to lead the Cardinal. Sihwan Kim also shot a 71, improving on his round yesterday by three strokes. Kim is now in a tie for 13th at one-over-par 145.

The third and final round begins tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.

KOHALA COAST, Hawaii - Fifth-ranked Stanford is in a tie for sixth place after completing the first round of play in the UH-Hilo Open today at the Mauna Lani Resort North Course in the Hawaiian Islands.

No. 74 sophomore Steve Ziegler went one-under-par on the day with a 71 to lead the Cardinal, putting him into a tie for 14th at the moment. Sophomore Sihwan Kim and Senior Dodge Kemmer carded two-over-par 74 and freshman David Chung posted a three-over-par 75 to round out the counted scores for the round for Stanford.

The Cardinal shares sixth place with Oklahoma. No. 11 Washington leads the pack in first, followed by second-ranked USC and Oregon in second and third, respectively. The Huskies are seven-under-par with a cumulative score of 281 and are four strokes ahead of the Trojans. The Cardinal trails Washington by 13 strokes with two rounds left to play.

Ziegler is five strokes behind UH-Hilo's Rodolfo Estrada, who leads with a six-under-par 66,

The second round will get underway tomorrow morning (Thursday) at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
