No. 11 Boise State Halts Stanford Win Streak

Feb. 8, 2009

Boise, Idaho - The Stanford wrestling team (7-13-1, 2-5 Pac-10) had its three-match win streak snapped today at the hands of No. 11 Boise State. Competing at Bronco Gymnasium in Boise, the defending Pac-10 champion won nine of 10 bouts and claimed a 38-3 victory.

Stanford's only win came from freshman Matt Sencenbaugh (9-22), who edged Brian Owen at 125 pounds, 10-9. Sencenbaugh came from behind to tie in the third period, and scored the winning takedown with just four seconds remaining in the bout. The win marked the fourth dual victory of the year for the rookie, and his second against a Pac-10 opponent. Sencenbaugh has now posted three wins in a row, marking a career-long streak for the freshman.

Sophomore Porfirio Madrigal (15-9) lost an 11-5 decision to Alan Bartelli at 133 pounds, and, at 141 pounds, sophomore Cameron Teitelman (12-16) lost a 10-1 major decision to last year's 133-pound Pac-10 champion, Cory Fish.

Stanford wrestlers then met six consecutive ranked opponents, including three currently ranked in the top 10 in their respective weight classes.

At 149 pounds, freshman Timmy Boone (7-9) stepped in to wrestle his first match since late November and was defeated by No. 17 Jason Chamberlain by technical fall, 23-7.

At 157 pounds, Lucas Espericueta (25-12) was pinned in the first period by the nation's sixth-ranked 157-pounder, Adam Hall.

Redshirt freshman Nick Amuchastegui (25-5) had his 12-match win streak broken by No. 18 Tyler Sherfey in the 165-pound bout. Sherfey scored the winning takedown with just 20 seconds remaining in the match to earn the 3-2 win. Amuchastegui upset Sherfey in the Cowboy Open title match in November, and had risen to the top of the Pac-10 rankings before the three-time NCAA qualifier avenged his loss this afternoon.

At 174 pounds, defending Pac-10 champ Nate Lee (No. 13) topped freshman Victor Haug (8-20) by major decision, 12-4.

All-American sophomore Kirk Smith (No. 4) bested Jake Johnson (27-14) by major decision at 184 pounds, scoring eight points in the third period to win 14-5.

At 197 pounds, Luke Feist (18-11) lost to No. 5 Brent Chriswell, the conference's 2008 184-pound champion. The Cardinal senior held a 3-2 advantage heading into the final period, but a takedown by Chriswell early in the third frame proved decisive in the 6-4 decision.

Stanford will conclude its regular season next weekend, meeting Cal Poly at 1 p.m. Sunday in Burnham Pavilion. The competition will be the last at home for Feist, the squad's only senior. The 2009 Pac-10 Championships will be held in Fullerton, Calif., March 1-2.
