STANFORD, Calif. - UC Davis sent 10 men to the plate in both the second and eighth innings, while freshman left-hander Anthony Kupbens pitched 7.0-excellent innings to lead the Aggies (11-40) to an 11-2 victory over host Stanford (29-23) in a non-conference game at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.
Stanford entered the game on a roll, having won six of its past seven games and nine of its previous 12 contests; however, the Cardinal was done in by a UC Davis offense that collected 15 hits to support the stout pitching of its freshman southpaw.
Ty Kelly paced the Aggies tonight, going 2-for-5 with three runs scored, a double, a home run, five RBI and a stolen base. Ryan Scoma, who followed Kelly in the lineup, went 3-for-4 with two RBI himself. Kyle Mihaylo finished 3-for-4 with a double, Daniel Cepin was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI, and Scott Kalush scored twice and drove in a pair.
Making just his third collegiate start, Kupbens (2-1) showed why he had held opponents to just a .220 batting average in his previous six outings. The left-hander yielded just two runs on five hits over 7.0 innings, while he struck out six and walked none.
Third baseman Adam Gaylord and reliever Alex Pracher provided a majority of the bright spots for Stanford tonight. Gaylord deposited one of Kupbens' few mistakes over the wall in left field for his second homer of the year, a solo shot in the fifth. Pracher gave the Cardinal a chance to rally tonight, as the right-hander entered in the second inning and pitched three-hit, shutout ball over a season-high 4.2 innings of work.
UC Davis scored its first run tonight on a two-out, RBI-single by Scoma in the first inning off Stanford starter Scott Snodgress (1-3). The Aggies then erupted for six runs in the second, with Kalush collecting a two-run single and Kelly a two-run double. Kelly's three-run homer highlighted Davis' four-run, eighth inning uprising.
A pair of lengthy Stanford streaks came to an end tonight. Colin Walsh went 0-for-4 after reaching base safely via hit, walk or hit-by-pitch in 34 consecutive games. Kellen Kiilsgaard was hitless in three at-bats, snapping his career-best 12 game hitting streak.
Stanford will wrap up the 2009 regular season this weekend, when the Cardinal hosts Oregon State in a three-game, Pac-10 series at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. First pitch on both Friday and Saturday are set for 6:00 p.m. PT, while the Sunday regular season finale will begin at 12 noon.
