2009 NCAA Golf Tournament Central
TOLEDO, Ohio - The fifth-ranked Stanford men's golf season closed out the 2008-09 season finishing 20th in stroke play at the 2009 NCAA Championships. The Cardinal, which had to finish their final three holes this morning after darkness ended yesterday's third round prematurely, will not advance to match play as it failed to land in the top eight on the leaderboard.
Oklahoma State, Arizona State, USC, Arkansas, Washington, Michigan, Texas A&M, and Georgia all advanced to match play. The Cowboys finished ahead of the second-place Sun Devils by 13 strokes, going three-under-par over 54 holes.
Stanford put itself in a hole early, shooting a 21-over-par 305 on the first day. The Cardinal then improved its score in the second round by seven strokes, putting it at 35-over-par total heading into the final round, and followed it up with a seven-over-par third round, its best of the tournament, but it would not be enough to move on.
Sophomore Steve Ziegler turned out the best individual performance for Stanford, shooting 73-69-76--218 to complete his outing in a tie for 30th at five over. Senior Dodge Kemmer ended his collegiate career with a stellar third round of 67 and concluded his tournament at plus-nine and in a tie for 60th.
Sophomore Sihwan Kim and freshman David Chung also recorded their best rounds of the tournament on the final day, as Kim went one over par and Chung two over. Kim finished plus-15 (t-113th) and Chung plus-19 (t-136th). Senior Daniel Lim, like Kemmer, also played in his final round as a Cardinal golfer and shot 79-72-83--234 to tie for 143rd.
North Carolina State's Matt Hill took the individual crown after carding a six-under-par 207, edging Clemson's Kyle Stanley by two strokes.

TOLEDO, Ohio - The fifth-ranked Stanford men's golf season will come to a close tomorrow morning when it finishes its third and final round. The Cardinal, which is currently 20th on the team leaderboard, will likely not be able to make up a 21-stroke deficit needed to make the cut for match play with three holes left as it was one of six teams that was unable to finish before dark due to a delayed third-round start this morning.
Stanford needed to finish in the top eight on the leaderboard after 54 holes in order to qualify for match play and the chance to play for the team championship. Though the Cardinal is on its way to its best round of the tournament, currently shooting three over par after posting rounds of plus-22 and plus-14 on the first and second days, the 2009 season will inevitably come to an end at the completion of the round.
Sophomore Steve Ziegler, who is currently tied for 27th, will go on to earn the best individual finish, but senior Dodge Kemmer will end his career surging up the ranks after firing four-under-par before the suspension of play. Sophomore Sihwan Kim also improved his standing with a one-over-par performance, while freshman David Chung completed the tournament with a 19-over-par 232. Senior Daniel Lim is tied with Chung in 137th with three holes left to play.
Oklahoma State captured the top seed by finishing first, and will play Georgia in its first match. Arizona State, USC, Arkansas, Washington, Michigan, and Texas A&M also qualified for match play. North Carolina State's Matt Hill took the individual crown after carding a six-under-par 207, edging Clemson's Kyle Stanley by two strokes.
A final recap of action will be posted tomorrow once Stanford completes its round. Current results are available on Golfstat.

TOLEDO, Ohio - The fifth-ranked Stanford men's golf team wrapped up the first day of action at the NCAA Championship, held at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, at 21-over-par and in a tie for 22nd out of the field of 30 teams. Top-ranked Oklahoma State and No. 2 Georgia sit atop the team leaderboard at four strokes over each with 36 holes left to qualify for match play.
Calm winds and warm temperatures favored the teams that teed off early in the day, but as the afternoon wore on the winds picked up enough to affect play. The Cardinal, which had its earliest tee time of 1:47 p.m., had to fight the conditions the entire round.
Sophomore No. 15 Steve Ziegler posted the best outing of the day for Stanford, going two-over-par on the par-71, 7,255-yard course to come to a rest in a tie for 29th. The Broomfield, Colo. native drained four birdies in 73 stroke effort. Following Ziegler was senior Dodge Kemmer, who completed his day at five-over-par 76 and in a tie for 75th place.
Rounding out the counting scores for the Cardinal was sophomore Sihwan Kim and senior Daniel Lim. Kim ended up at six-over-par, suffering two double-bogeys on the front nine, and Lim carded an eight-over-par 79.
Freshman David Chung was steady through the back nine, escaping one over par, but struggled with the front nine, closing the day at 10 over par.
No. 4 Washington posted the best result out of the seven Pac-10 schools participating in the tournament, finishing the day in a tie for fourth place at nine over par. Defending champion UCLA ended the day tied for 25th. Three players are currently tied for the individual lead at two-under-par; Northwestern's Jonathan Bowers, Illinois' Scott Langley, and North Carolina State's Matt Hill.
Stanford has 36 holes to climb the leaderboard into at least one of the top-eight spots in order to advance to the match play portion of the NCAA Championship, set to begin on May 29. The Cardinal will tee off in the second round on the first hole at 8:37 a.m., playing with South Carolina and USC. Tickets are available at the Inverness Club for $15.00 per day and live stats are available on Golfstat.
