Stanford, Calif. - Stanford men's soccer got its season underway with an exhibition game against Sonoma State. The Cardinal and Seawolves tied 0-0, despite Stanford outshooting their opponent 23-4.
Playing on their practice field, Stanford took the chance to get everyone in the game with 23 players seeing significant action. Stanford controlled the game for the entire 90 minutes, but could not finish a goal.
Head coach Bret Simon used to game to get the entire team some game action as the Cardinal continue to prepare for the regular season.
Stanford had 12 different players take shots, including six that were on goal. However, Sonoma State keeper Brook Johnson saved all six attempts. Garret Gunther led Stanford with four shots.
Senior John Moore and freshmen Galen Perkins and Jason Dodson combined for the shutout in goal. Perkins made the lone save of the game for the Cardinal.
The Cardinal will continue their exhibition season on Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 7:00 p.m. The Cardinal will move back over to Laird Q. Cagan Stadium as they continue to tune-up for their regular season opener on Sept. 1 at Lehigh.
