Stanford, Calif. - Despite an early lead, Stanford (7-2-1, 1-1-1) settled for a 1-1 tie in Pac-10 action versus Washington (4-4-4, 1-0-3), Sunday afternoon at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The Cardinal remained unbeaten at home, but saw their five game home winning streak come to an end.
For a second consecutive game Bobby Warshaw helped Stanford to the lead with an early goal. His goal Sunday came off a header on a perfect cross from Ryan Thomas who was taking the corner kick. The goal came in the fourth minute, just as it did Friday in a 1-0 win over Oregon State. It was the team-leading fifth goal of the season for Warshaw and the second assist for Thomas.
Warshaw almost tallied another goal just minutes later when Adam Jahn centered a ball that he volleyed with his back to the goal. However, Washington keeper Ryan Hawkins was there to make one of his four saves of the game.
Washington evened the score at one in the 16th minute when Ryan Moore finished a one touch pass from Brent Richards.
The rest of the first half played evenly with both teams coming to the break with just three shots.
John Moore led the Stanford defense coming out twice in the final five minutes of the first half to break up crosses that appeared as if they would be scoring chances for Washington. Moore finished the game with six saves as he continues he solid play behind the Stanford defense.
The lack of shooting in the first half did not hold up in the second. Stanford took 12 shots, while Washington took nine, as the action went from end to end with both teams looking for the game-winner.
Stanford's best chance may have again come from Warshaw, but his bicycle kick in the box went high.
With the game still deadlocked at 1-1 through regulation, the game went to extra time. Stanford was playing in just its second overtime game, having beaten San Francisco 1-0 on a Cameron Lamming golden goal back in September.
Extra time was not a new concept for Washington, having already played five overtime games, going 1-1-3 in those contests.
The Huskies outshot Stanford 5-2 in the extra periods and had several good chances before the final whistle was blown. However, the Stanford defense remained resilient and the Cardinal earned the draw.
Stanford heads back out on the road next week with games at San Diego State and UCLA. The Cardinal will face the Aztecs on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7:00 pm, before taking on the Bruins on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 1:00 pm.
