Final Stats

Stanford, Calif. - No. 20 Stanford fell in the Pac-10 opener, 1-0 to No. 7 California at Edwards Stadium on Friday night. The game was scoreless through the first half, but Cal scored the only goal early in the second period.

The Cardinal fell to 6-2-0, ending its six game winning streak. Stanford outshout Cal, 12-7, but could not find the back of the net.

The first half saw a flurry of offense with the Cardinal totaling eight shot to six for California. However, neither team was able to break the scoreless tie.

Just 3:50 into the second half, California forward Andrew Wiedeman beat John Moore for the only goal of the game. Wiedeman's unassisted goal was his ninth of the season and would prove to be the game winner.

Stanford did not allow another shot the rest of the half and had four chances of its own, but was unable to beat David Bingham of Cal. Bingham recorded five saves and earned his third shutout of the season.

Adam Jahn and Daniel Leon led the Cardinal with three shots apiece, including three on goal between them.

John Moore recorded two saves for Stanford in front of the usual stout Cardinal defense.

With the loss Stanford falls to 0-1-0 in Pac-10 play with nine more matches to play. The Cardinal return home next weekend to face Oregon State and Washington. The Cardinal will take on the Beavers, Friday Oct. 9, at 7 pm and the Huskies Sunday, Oct. 11, at 1 pm, both at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
