TEMPE, Ariz. - Returning home to compete for the final time as a collegian, Phoenix-area native Carly Janiga set a collegiate career best of 39.650 to win the all-around in No. 8 Stanford's 196.675-195.900 women's gymnastics dual-meet victory over Arizona State on Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

Janiga, a six-time All-American and defending Pac-10 all-around champion, won three events in addition to her all-around victory. In two previous collegiate meets in the Valley of the Sun - she grew up in the suburb of Paradise Valley - Janiga had never won.

But Friday, she tied a career best of 9.95 in the balance beam, and also scored high to win the floor exercise (9.925) and uneven bars (9.925), in addition to a non-winning 9.85 in the vault.

"It was special," Stanford coach Kristen Smyth said. "It was an inspirational performance for everyone else."

Stanford (8-2) won its 14th consecutive meet against No. 24 Arizona State (2-7) while earning a season-high team score.

The Cardinal had struggled all season on the balance beam, but put it all together for the first time, finishing off the meet with a season-high 49.450 in the final rotation with all six scores at 9.85 or above.

Alyssa Brown led off the rotation with a 9.875 and Smyth credited that performance with getting the Cardinal on the right track.

"She really set the tone for the beam team," Smyth said. "She did a tremendous job. She absolutely stepped up huge tonight."

Stanford was forced to count a fall on the floor exercise, but was able to hold off Arizona State's season-high score largely by building solid scores on the bars (49.200) - with Allyse Ishino matching Janiga's 9.925 -- and vault (49.175).

"The highlight for us was being able to finish strong," Smyth said. "Beam was an area we needed to improve on and it was truly wonderful to see the girls perform the way they practice on that event. To step up and finish strong and to see the team stay focused showed control and mental toughness. That was great to see tonight."
