STANFORD, Calif. -
Live weekday Stanford TV, radio and webcast schedule listed below.
Baseball
Six former Stanford players will begin the Major League Baseball season on Opening Day rosters. Chris Carter (New York Mets), Ryan Garko (Texas Rangers), Jody Gerut (Milwaukee Brewers), Jeremy Guthrie (Baltimore Orioles), John Hester (Arizona Diamondbacks) and Carlos Quentin (Chicago White Sox). In addition, A.J. Hinch is the manager of the Diamondbacks, Ruben Amaro, Jr. of the Philadelphia Phillies, and Kenny Williams (White Sox) are big league general managers. Notables starting in Triple-A looking to make their debuts are Jason Castro (Houston Astros) and Michael Taylor (Oakland A’s). Drew Storen (Washington Nationals) is starting in Double-A.
Women’s Basketball
The all-time series between Stanford and Connecticut is tied at 5-5 heading into Tuesday's national title game in San Antonio, Texas. The Huskies won this season's regular-season meeting, 80-68 in Hartford on Dec. 23, while the Cardinal does hold the distinction of being the last team to defeat the Huskies, scoring an 82-73 victory at the Final Four on April 6, 2008. Stanford and UConn have split their four previous NCAA Tournament games, with the Huskies holding a 2-1 lead in Final Four contests. However, they have never met in an NCAA Championship final.
Men’s Golf
Stanford will host the 42nd Annual U.S. Intercollegiate Golf Tournament beginning Sunday at Stanford Golf Course. The 19-team field features five of the top-10 teams in the nation according to Golfstat, including No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 Washington, No. 4 Oregon, No. 6 UCLA and No. 8 Arizona State. The medalist of this tournament will receive an exemption to play in the Reno-Tahoe Open, set for July 16-18 at the Montreux Golf & Country Club.
Stanford finished fourth in last year’s event with a team score 829. Washington ran away from the field to win the team title with a 36-under 809. The U.S. Intercollegiate will mark Stanford’s last tuneup before the Pac-10 Championships, April 26-28 at the Karsten Course in Tempe, Ariz.
Stanford golf is the subject of a new book, released Monday, called, “The Last Putt: Two Teams, One Dream, and a Freshman Named Tiger.” by Brian Murphy and Neil Hayes. The book chronicles the fortunes of the Stanford and Oklahoma State teams during the 1995 season, which came down to a one-hole, sudden-death playoff to decide the national championship. Unfortunately for Stanford, Oklahoma State prevailed when the Cardinal missed a putt that would have extended the playoff.
Women’s Golf
The 13th-ranked Cardinal opens play Friday at the PING/ASU Invitational at the Karsten Course in Tempe, Ariz. One of the strongest fields of the year awaits the Cardinal in Tempe, as seven of the top-10 teams will be represented, including No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Arizona State, No. 5 Alabama, No. 6 USC, No. 7 Arizona, No. 8 Purdue and No. 9 Pepperdine. It will mark Stanford’s last regular season event of the year heading into the Pac-10 Championships, slated for April 19-21 at the Eugene (Ore.) Country Club.
Women’s Gymnastics
Stanford had a strong simulated meet performance last weekend in preparation for the NCAA Southeast Regional in Morgantown, W.Va., on Saturday. Stanford needs to finish among the top two to advance to the NCAA Championships April 22-24 in Gainesville, Fla. The following are the national rankings for each team in the Southeast Regional: No. 6 Stanford, tied with No. 6 Michigan, No. 18 Southern Utah, No. 28 North Carolina State, No. 29 Kent State, and No. 31 West Virginia.
Men’s Gymnastics
Tim Gentry captured the individual Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title on rings to give No. 1 Stanford a source of optimism during an otherwise disappointing third-place finish in Norman, Okla. Gentry scored 15.45 to top Kyle Bunthuwong of Cal who had 14.75.
Lacrosse
Claire Hubbard had four assists in a 12-7 win over Cal on Sunday. The four assists gave Hubbard 72 for career, surpassing Kelsey Twist as the all-time leader at Stanford. Twist had 70 in her career at Stanford that ended in 2005.
Sailing
Stanford’s coed team finished fourth and its women’s team seventh at the St. Francis Intersectional in San Francisco at the St. Francis Yacht Club. The coed team combined for eight top-10 finishes in the “A” division, while the “B” division skippered by Peter Stemler, made the top-10 in all nine races, including back-to-back wins in the fifth and six races for 48 points and 130 total points. Stemler skippered the “B” division coed team to 48 points and third place in his division.
Stanford will host the two-day team conference championships at its Redwood City facility on April 10-11, before traveling to the coed dingy conference championships in Honolulu on April 17-18. The women's conference race will take place in Long Beach on April 24-25.
Women’s Soccer
Six former Stanford players are on Women’s Professional Soccer rosters. The Bay Area’s FC Gold Pride has four ex-Cardinal’s: goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart, defender Rachel Buehler, forward Kelley O’Hara, and defender Ali Riley. Also, defender Natalie Spilger plays for the Chicago Red Stars and defender Allison Falk plays for the Philadelphia Independence. The regular season opens Saturday.
Softball
The Cardinal won its opening Pac-10 series, winning two of three from California at Smith Family Stadium last weekend. Freshman pitcher Teagan Gerhart picked up both victories, bringing her season total to 20. She needs just one win to break into the Cardinal record book for wins in a single season.
Men's Swimming
Former Stanford All-American Paul Kornfeld earned a spot in August’s Pan Pacific Championships after winning the 100-meter breaststroke Thursday at the Canadian Pan Pacific Trials. Kornfeld, who had the fifth-fastest preliminary time (1:03.81), finished in 1:02.48 in the finals. On Friday, Kornfeld was second in the 50-meter breaststroke (28.81). He was third in the 200 breaststroke on Saturday (2:17.11).
Men’s Tennis
Stanford dropped its first match of the year at the No. 6 singles position during a 5-2 loss to USC last week. Prior to that contest, Cardinal players had posted a 14-0 record at the No. 6 spot of the lineup.
Women’s Tennis
An inspection of the rule book might be in order if Stanford (14-1, 3-0) resumes its rain-suspended match against visiting USC (11-7, 3-1). The teams were washed out Friday and were knotted at 3-3 in a makeup on Sunday before having to stop play, with the doubles just beginning. The match would be resumed at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif., later this month, but only if the result is needed to decide the conference champion. If they did, and if Stanford lost, would that count as the end of its NCAA-record home winning streak, which stands at 159?
Men’s Track and Field
In a light weekend for the track and field teams, Tyrone McGraw led the Cardinal at the Johnny Mathis Invitational in San Francisco by running 10.71.
Women's Track and Field
Stanford is shooting for its 10th consecutive Big Meet victory when the Cardinal travels to Berkeley on Saturday.
Men’s Volleyball
Stanford’s weekend split at Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara did not cost the Cardinal the No. 1 spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association rankings. However, it did make the team’s top spot a little precarious. After being the unanimous No. 1 last week, this week’s No. 1 votes (16 in all) were divided among four teams: No. 1 Stanford (11), No. 2 BYU (3), No. 3 Pepperdine (1) and No. 5 Hawai’i (1). Stanford plays host to Pepperdine on Friday (7 p.m.) at Maples Pavilion.
Women’s Water Polo
Freshman goalie Kate Baldoni leads the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in goals-against average with 1.94. Baldoni has allowed only 31 goals in 16 games. The second-place GAA is 3.29.
