Pac-10 Rowing Championships InformationSTANFORD, Calif. - Stanford men's and women's rowing will head to Lake Natoma this weekend for the Pac-10 Championships, set to be held Sunday, May 16. Last year the women finished second in the team standings but the I Eight claimed its first gold medal since 2003, while the men's I Eight took home the silver medal and the team finished third overall.
The Cardinal women enter the conference championships ranked fifth in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division I Varsity Eight Poll, while the men's I Eight is ranked No. 13.
The event will begin Sunday morning with the Men's Frosh/Novice Eight Grand Final at 9:30 a.m., followed by the women's Novice Eight Grand Final at 9:50 a.m. Varsity Four action begins at 10:10 a.m., while the II Eights get underway at 10:50 a.m. and the I Eights begin their Grand Finals at 11:30 a.m.
The Cardinal women claimed second in the team competition at last year's Pac-10 Championships, while the I Eight set the new Lake Natoma course record with a blazing 6:18.6 to claim gold in the Grand Final. This year, Stanford, the defending NCAA Champion, last saw the main body of Pac-10 rivals at Lake Natoma in mid-April, finishing second in a final group behind California but ahead of Washington State.
On the men's side, the Cardinal defeated the I Eight from Oregon State in its last action back on May 2 at Redwood Shores. A day before, the Cardinal fell in a hard race against California, while the Frosh Eight claimed victory over Oregon State at Redwood Shores on April 18. Last year, the men's I Eight surged ahead of top-ranked Washington to claim second place in the Grand Final behind California.
The men's I Eight race will be the first of the season for the Cardinal with Sebastian Peterlin in the line-up against the nation's top two crews in California and Washington.
"Sebastian is our Andrew Luck-Toby Gerhart component," said Stanford Director of Rowing and men's head coach Craig Amerkhanian. "He is powerful and gifted athletically. The Stanford training staff has done a terrific job in getting Seb ready for the championship season (Pac-10's, National Championships June 3-5). Our varsity eight now is in the position to race to win in our remaining races."
The II Eight is racing to qualify for the nationals as well.
"We need to compete in the 2V eight all the way down the course," Amerkhanian noted.
The Stanford Frosh Eight is renewing its rivalry with California, a crew they lost to by just 23 hundredths of a second two weeks ago at the "Big Row." The freshman team will also race in the Varsity Four event looking to secure a medal in a challenging field.
