Stanford, Calif. - Stanford got its season underway with a 3-2 exhibition victory over Sonoma State on Sunday at the practice field adjacent to Cagan Stadium. The Cardinal and Seawolves traded goals until Adam Jahn put the Cardinal up for good in the 61st minute.
The two teams also played an additional 30 minutes with Stanford scoring two goals.
Stanford used the exhibition match to get everyone in the game and let the coaching staff see how different combinations played together. Overall, 29 Stanford players saw action, including all four goalkeepers.
"It was a great chance to evaluate our players against a quality opponent," said head coach Bret Simon.
The Cardinal got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Garrett Gunther in just the third minute. Sonoma State tied the game in the ninth minute, before Stanford reclaimed the lead in the 11th minute. Ryan Thomas lofted a long cross off a free kick and found Cameron Lamming on the back post for the one-touch goal.
Sonoma State scored early in the second half to tie the game, before Jahn added the game winner. Dominique Yahyavi assisted on the final goal.
In the extra time, Jahn added a second goal and Cullen Wilson has a goal and an assist. Nearly the entire Cardinal squad saw action in the game, including eight freshmen wearing the Stanford jersey for the first time.
Stanford will continue with its second and final exhibition game, next Saturday, Aug. 28, at 6:00 p.m. against Air Force. The Cardinal will open the regular season on Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 1:00 p.m. when they take on Vermont.
