Burlington, Vt. - No. 13 Stanford suffered 2-1 upset loss in overtime at Vermont on Wednesday afternoon from Centennial Field. The Cardinal took an early lead, but the Catamounts fought back, forcing overtime and eventually a scoring a golden goal for the win.
Stanford scored the opening goal at the 16:38 mark in the first half when Dominique Yahyavi sent a corner into the box that Adam Jahn finished for Stanford's first goal of the season. Jahn had four goals in his rookie year last season to give him five for his career. With three goals in two exhibition games, Jahn is showing the ability to score goals that Stanford has lacked in recent seasons.
The Catamounts equalized at the 67:59 mark in the second half when Juan Peralta beat Jason Dodson. Peralta made a series of moves to get free for the unassisted goal.
Stanford battled back late the game as it looked for the game winner. The Cardinal had a couple chances, the best coming on a through ball to Garrett Gunther with fewer than four minutes to go. Gunther briefly broke free, but his shot was deflected high. The score would remain 1-1 and the two teams would head to overtime.
In the overtime, Vermont wasted little time putting the pressure on. Just six minutes into extra time, the Catamounts converted the golden goal with a cross from the right wing to a redirected header.
The win for Vermont (1-0-0) matched its win total from all of last year. Meanwhile, Stanford (0-1-0) will have to regroup as it readies for No. 10 Harvard on Saturday. The Cardinal will take on the Crimson at 4:00 pm in Cambridge.
