Sept. 26, 2010

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. / LONG BEACH, Calif.-- Stanford's freshmen dominated the Pacific Coast Conference Men's Singlehanded Championships with Oliver Toole leading the pack in Long Beach, while on the East Coast the coed team finished 13th at the St. Mary's Fall Regatta.

The Santa Barbara freshman (far left), who led after day one's first seven races, finished off his first collegiate race with wins in five of the final seven races for 36 points, outdistancing Cal Maritime's junior Sean Kelly by 17 points in the 14-race championship. Toole, who won half the races and finished second or third another five times, was the first of three Stanford freshmen in the top-four.

Mateo Vargas (far right) was third with 82 points and Kevin Laube (middle) was in fourth with 92 points. Of the 17 sailors the three Cardinal sailors won nine of the 14 races and were in the top-10 in all but one race.

At the coed race in Maryland, Stanford finished with 384 points, dropping two spots from Saturday. Nick Dugdale skippered freshmen Anna McConnell and Helena Scutt in the A Division, tallying 174 points, while Ben Pedrick skippered the B squad with crew Scutt and Katie Riklin for 210 points.

It was a solid start to the Cardinal Class of 2014, as freshman Molly McKinney and Toole qualified for nationals. McKinney on Friday secured the spot with a second place finish at the PCC Women's Singlehanded Championships.
