Stanford, Calif. - Stanford finished up the non-conference season with a 1-0 win over Denver on a hot afternoon at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. Adam Jahn's second-half goal was all the Cardinal needed to even its record at 4-4-0 with its fourth consecutive victory.
"Today was a grind it out kind of game on a hot day," said head coach Bret Simon. "It is the type of game that good team find a way to win."
Through the first 45 minutes, the game remained scoreless as both sides seemed to be feeling each other out. The Cardinal managed seven first-half shots with three being on target.
Action began to pick up in the second half, capped by a tremendous finish from Jahn. Dersu Abolfathi sent the ball across the box to Jahn, who finished with a side volley into the upper right corner of the goal. It was the second goal of the season for Jahn and the second assist for Abolfathi.
"Adam's goal was top class," said Simon. "It was a great finish."
After the goal, Denver pressed forward looking for the equalizer, but the Stanford defense remained strong. The backline of Ryan Thomas, Bobby Warshaw, Tommy Ryan and Cameron Lamming recorded its second-consecutive shutout.
Jason Dodson made two saves and picked up his third shutout of the season.
Stanford will now begin Pac-10 play, beginning with a rivalry matchup with California. The Cardinal will host the Golden Bears on Saturday, October 2, at 7:00 pm.
