Final Stats

San Diego, Calif. - Stanford's second-half comeback attempt fell short as the Cardinal fell 1-0 to San Diego State on Sunday afternoon at the SDSU Sportsdeck. The loss drops Stanford to 7-8-0 and 3-4-0 in the Pac-10.

San Diego State outshot the Cardinal 8-3 in the first half and got on the board in the 27th minute on a goal from Miles Byass. Casey Meuser sent a through ball to Byass, who blasted the ball at the far post, beating Jason Dodson.

It would be the only goal Dodson would allow as the redshirt freshman made five saves.

The Cardinal came out with renewed energy in the second half and immediately created dangerous chances. Just four minutes into the second period, Ryan Thomas tried a shot from distance, but it went just wide. Later Dominique Yahyavi would have a go, but the shot was blocked by the Aztec defense.

Over the final 10 minutes, the Cardinal began to show its eagerness for the tying goal, creating chance after chance. In the 81st minute, a corner by Garrett Gunther found the head of Bobby Warshaw, but his header went wide.

Moments later, a long centering pass was cleared to Thomas who ripped a shot from 28 yards, but Aztec keeper Brad Byrns was there to make a diving save.

In the 87th minute, Dersu Abolfathi tried a sliding shot, but again Byrns was there for the save, this time tipping it over the bar. The Cardinal continued its late flury, but a Gunther shot was blocked and a Tommy Ryan chance was saved.

Despite its efforts, the Cardinal would be held scoreless, dropping a tough one to San Diego State, 1-0. Stanford outshot the Aztecs 8-3 in the period and had four corners, but were unable to find the elusive goal.

The Cardinal will now return to campus for its final two home matches of the season. The Cardinal will face Washington on Friday, Oct. 29, at 7:00pm and Oregon State on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 1:00pm.
