Cambridge, Mass. - No. 13 Stanford finished a tough opening road trip to the East Coast with a 2-1 loss at No. 10 Harvard. The Cardinal fought back to tie the game in the second half, but eventually fell for the second consecutive game.
Harvard took an early lead with a fortunate goal that deflected off a Stanford defender. The Crimson outshot Stanford 9-4 in the half, but Jason Dodson made three of his seven saves to keep the game close.
The Cardinal came out with renewed energy in the second half and equalized in the 51st minute. Cardinal senior Bobby Warshaw tied the game off a free kick from 25 yards out. It was the first goal of the season for Warshaw, who has led the Cardinal in scoring each of the last three seasons.
Stanford kept the pressure on in the second half, totaling 11 shots and four corners in the half. Harvard also had its chances and eventually tallied the game winner in the 80th minute. Brian Rogers scored off the dribble from the left side.
The loss dropped the Cardinal to 0-2-0 on the season. The team will now return home to play six of its next seven games at the familiar confines of Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. In the home opener the Cardinal will face UNLV on Friday, Sept. 10 at 2:00 p.m.
