Divers Open New Year in Top-Two

LOS ANGELES-- Meg Hostage and Stephanie Phipps finished 1-2 in the three-meter and Brent Eichenseer was the runner-up in the one-meter on the first of three days of diving at the Bruin Invite to begin the New Year.

Hostage's score of 310.80 in the finals was her best of the day, edging out her freshman teammate, who scored a tally of 299.90. The duo finished 2-3 in the semifinals behind UCLA's Laura Winn who led the second round with a score of 278.05, ahead of both Hostage (277.55) and Phipps (276.35) in a close three-way race.

Eichenseer entered the one-meter finals following the top prelim (328.40) and semifinal scores (328.15), finishing second to Cal's Thomas Henninger's 330.80 score with a mark of 328.30. He was one of four Cardinal men in the top-six.

Taylor Sishc rebounded to finish third with a mark of 315.55 in the finals after finishing sixth in the semifinals (300.15) with his lowest score of the day. Freshman Noah Garcia rounded out the top-five with a mark of 303.95 after finishing third in the semifinnals (314.70) and fifth in the preliminaries (308.25) among the 13 original competitors. Dhruv Tyagi was sixth (299.35).

Phipps never finished lower than third in any of the three rounds, finishing third to start her day with a score of 285.50. Hostage was fifth the prelims of the three-meter (276.75). Kylie Rosenstock finished tenth in the finals of the three-meter with a score of 248.15.

Diving continues with the men's three-meter and women's one-meter on Saturday and both platforms on Sunday. Both swim teams also compete on Saturday at the Avery Aquatics Center with the men swimming against Pacific at 11 a.m and the women competing against the Tigers at 1 p.m.
