Cardinal Defend Pac-10 Title After Strong Finish

Feb. 26, 2011

Final Stats

FEDERAL WAY, Wash.-- Stanford Swimming defended its Pac-10 title by coming back to defeat Cal 1567.5 to 1545.5 to win back-to-back conference titles for the first time since 2005-06 as Maya DiRado (200 back), Kate Dwelley (100 free) and Meg Hostage (platform) all took home titles on the final day.

The Cardinal entered the final day trailing its Bay Area rivals, but came through with three wins, five swimmers each in the top-24 of the 200 back and 100 free and four more in the 200 breast.

Dwelley won her second Pac-10 event, posting a win in the 100 free with a time of 48.14 one of four Cardinal swimmers in the A Finals. DiRado picked up a win in the 200 back with a time of 1:53.04, continuing a recent dominance of the event after Julia Smit won the 2007 and 2009 titles. Dwelley also won the 200 free and was a runner-up in the 50 free on the week.

Hostage rounded out the winners, taking home her second career title and first since a win in the 2008 three-meter as a freshman. Hostage scored a mark of 322.65. Hostage began the final found with three 7.5's and an 8.0 on a somersault and twist pike and then followed with 7.0's or better on a somersault pike before scoring 8.0 or better from the five judges in a somersault tuck from the armstand position. Hostage edged ASU's Elina Eggers (319.25) for the title.

The win by Hostage coupled with the second place finish by the 400 free relay team was more than enough to beat the Bears after Liz Smith was a runner-up in the 200 breast (2:10.02), one of four Cardinal in three finals.

Stanford reached back and powered through the morning session with Andi Murez posting the top prelim time in the 100 free, while DiRado and Felicia Lee were 1-2 in the prelim of the 200 back. Hostage had the second best prelim platform score.
