MINNEAPOLIS-- Chad La Tourette in the 1650 freestyle and Bobby Bollier in the 200 butterfly were both national runners-up as Stanford finished in third place at the NCAA Championships.
Curtis Lovelace (200 breast) and Mathew Swanston (200 back) were both fourth on the final day as Stanford finished with 403 points. California won its first title since 1980 with 493 points, while Texas was second with 470.5 points.
Bollier was second for the second time this week, finishing second in the 200 fly to Mark Dylla, who set a NCAA championship and pool record with a time of 1:40.60. Bollier swam 1:40.76, after the fastest prelim time (1:41.63). Bollier was second in the 500 free on Thursday.
In a four-way dog fight in the mile, La Tourette tied for second with a time of 14:34.80 with Georgia's Martin Grodzki, as Texas' Michael McBroom led the field with a time of 14:32.86. La Tourette was the defending champion coming into the meet.
Swanston and Matt Thompson finished fourth and fifth in the 200 back behind Arizona's Cory Chitwood, as the two Cardinal swimmers separated each other by .14 seconds with Swanston coming in with a time of 1:42.00, behind Chitwood's 1:38.84.
Lovelace finished with a time of 1:54.01 in the 200 breast. Stanford placed three swimmers in the two finals of the 100 free, with Austin Staab finishing sixth (42.30) behind Cal's Nathan Adrian's time of 41.10. Jake Allen won the 100 free consolation finals with a time of 42.32 for the Cardinal. Stanford also won the B Final of the 400 free relay to close out the meet.
Staab earlier had won the 100 fly and 200 IM, completing a solid meet for the fourth-year swimmer.
NOTES: Staab became the 32nd Stanford swimmer to score over 100 points at the NCAA Championships, finishing with 115 points after this meet. The total is 29th all-time... Stanford had nine swimmers make one of two A or B finals following the prelims, the third-most of any program behind Cal's 11 and Texas' 10... it was the 26th time under Skip Kenney the Cardinal finished in the top-three at the NCAA meet.
