Stanford, Calif. - Day two of the Stanford Invitational began in a driving rain, but midway through the day the skies parted and everyone enjoyed a little California sunshine. For a second consecutive day, the Cardinal posted some top marks, but Saturday it was the women coming through with a pair of school records. Katerina Stefanidi broke her own school record in the pole vault and Kori Carter bettered an eight-year-old record in the 100-meter hurdles.
Stefanidi broke her own record with a vault of 14-6 or 4.42 meters. The mark was just off the Olympic `A' standard of 4.50 meters that Stefanidi will be aiming for this season as she hopes to represent her home country of Greece in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Carter earned the new record with a time of 13.41. The standout freshman improved on her time from yesterday's prelims to overtake Lindsey Johnson who ran 13.48 in 2003.
The Cardinal women excelled in the 200 meters with Shataya Hendricks leading the way with a time of 23.99. Brittni Dixon-Smith (24.05) and Carissa Levingston (24.08) were not far off their teammate as the trio placed 3-4-5 overall in the event. Hannah Farley (24.76), Karynn Dunn (25.16), Whitney Liehr (25.56) and Taylor Dewberry (25.95) also competed in the event.
In the 800 meters, the Cardinal were paced by Sarah McCurdy who ran 2:11.59, which was just better than teammate Madeline Duhon who ran 2:11.93. Also running well was Victoria Pennings who ran 2:12.33. Joy O'Hare (2:15.32) and Sophie Charlton (2:26.99) also stepped up from the 400 meters to compete in the longer event.
Many of the same athletes that competed earlier in the day also competed in the relays with the top 4x100 running 45.26 and the top 4x400 running 3:42.58. The `A' section of the 4x400 that was made up of Carter, Levingston, Dixon-Smith and Hendricks placed fourth overall.
In the throws, Alyssa Wisdom competed in the hammer, tossing 112-0.

Bypassing his top events for the meet, Amaechi Morton ran the 200 meters and placed fourth in the top section with a time of 21.29. Also running well in the event was Mark Mueller who finished with a time of 21.71 and was ninth overall. Colin Hepburn (22.48), Kevin Cardey (22.53), Alfredo Corral (22.64) and Alex Lee (22.85) also competed in the event.
The Cardinal had a large group of mostly freshmen compete in the 800 meters, but it was veteran Spencer Castro that finished with the fastest time. Castro ran a personal best of 1:52.36 to edge freshman Michael Atchoo in his heat as Atchoo ran 1:53.48. In a later heat, freshmen Marco Bertolotti ran 1:52.99 and Kenny Krotzer ran 1:53.44. Others competing were Bronson Duran who ran 1:55.08 and Ryan Valdes who ran 1:56.44.
Corral, Morton, Duran and Castro also combined in the top section of the 4x400 meters to run 3:15.11 and place fourth. The 4x100-meter relay team placed third with a time of 42.21.
In the field, the Cardinal throwers showed off its depth as Geoffrey Tabor led the way, placing third in the shot put with a toss of 57-0. Jeremy Hines also competed in the top section of the event, throwing 52-8 ¾, while Sean Wallace threw in the second section and recorded a mark of 47-1 ½.
In the hammer, Carter Wells placed sixth with a toss of 189-9, while Quinn Dawson was ninth with a throw of 178-4.
